Bird of Paradise

The bird of paradise flower is one of my favourites. In Tunisia we spotted some buds outside our hotel that were due to flower.

My Dad has had a bird of paradise plant in his conservatory (below) for about 10 years and it hasn’t flowered since he bought it. I would love one, but I think I’d be too impatient waiting for it to flower!

To our surprise, a bud sprouted up out of nowhere this year! At Christmas we were discussing if the new shoot would be more leaves or if it would be a flower.

It was a nice surprise when the flower opened up, with another one following close behind.

Gorgeous aren’t they?

Apparently it is good for the plants to live in smaller pots because when the roots have no room to grow, they grow upwards instead and that is where the flowers come from. You learn something new every day!

  1. Oh I love them too. When I first met my husband he had one growing in his house- and later sent me a bouquet with one in it! They are wonderful.
