Clay Sessions for Schools in and around Northamptonshire

Since having my daughter, it has become important to me to introduce her to what I do, and for her to learn about and get involved with my passions as much as possible. Watching her play with sensory materials such as flowers and clay, and seeing how it helps her to learn has inspired me to make it important for other children to be able to access clay as a learning material too.

I am excited to be offering ceramics sessions for primary schools in Northamptonshire and surrounding areas.

Connect with Nature

Where possible, the sessions will involve a short walk within the school grounds/garden to give the children the opportunity to forage and collect their own organic objects to press into the clay. I will have a selection of nature materials for them to choose from as well.

Expressive Learning & Independence

To encourage independence, before starting the clay work the children will be asked to select their own rolling pin and cloth to set up at their individual workspaces.

There will be a few processes for the children to gather around to watch, and then be free to have a go themselves. The more expressive and daring the better – there are no limits and no such thing as a silly question.

School Clay Project Ideas

Popular primary school projects include a collaborative tile making session, where the completed tiles can be displayed as a mural on a wall inside or outside the school. Simple but so effective!

For any classes towards the older end of the school, slightly more complex sessions can be discussed where the children could hand build a functional piece.

Nursery and pre-school settings are also welcome to get in touch for ideas on how younger children can experience clay.

After a few weeks, when dry the children’s masterpieces will be coated in a transparent glaze and fired in my kiln, before returning them back to the school with a pack of wildflower seeds and mounting advice.

Charlotte worked with all our pupils from Y3 to Y6. The children benefitted from a highly engaging enriching experience. The tile making project enabled pupils to learn about the environment, look at sources in nature and extend their skills and understanding of the use of clay in art. Charlotte’s approach made this into a powerful reflective project for the pupils in which they had to bring their own creativity and design ideas to make an individual piece of art.

Angela Rock, Head, Falconer's Hill Academy

Just to say another huge thank you for your time today! It was an absolute pleasure and the children thoroughly enjoyed the new experience!

Mrs Sims, Greens Norton CE Primary School

It was so fun. I loved it especially rolling the flowers into the clay. It was really satisfying to peel back.

Pupil

Thank you so very much for today. The children had such fun creating their own tiles and I can’t wait to see them displayed as part of their legacy. It was so wonderful to see them expressing themselves creatively and those children who you wouldn’t think would enjoy the activity got fully immersed and created some truly wonderful pieces.

Laura Mooney, Woodford Halse CE Primary Academy

It was so much fun. The lady was very kind. 5 stars

Pupil

I really enjoyed making my leavers tile. I found putting the flowers into the clay and rolling made so many different marks.

Pupil

Thank you so much for visiting the school today. The work that the children created looks wonderful!
