Surface Inspiration

Browsing images of inspiration in my Pinterest Boards, a few recent ‘pins’ have really stood out and caught my eye. I use these images to develop surface design/decoration ideas onto the surface of clay when making.

Can you believe the above image is of rust? It’s amazing how something so old and weathered can appear so beautiful. I love the colours.

This fantastic piece above is by artist Amy Eisenfeld Genser, I recently came across her work and has trouble choosing which image to share… Each of her individual dimensional paper collages are stunning. Check out her website for more inspirational pieces.

Another image that truly inspires me is this beach snapshot above. I love the contrasting light and dark colours, amongst layers of texture and linear patterns. I think this would make a stunning wall piece.

Patterns in Nature

I think these amazingly close up images of tree cells and cross sections of tree roots are stunning! I’ll be using them as inspiration for some new designs… I love the different sized circular shapes bundled together in little patterns.

Refreshing Inspiration

Here’s a little snippet of soome of the images from my pin board that are inspiring me this week.

Simple and elegant… I’m still in coastal seasidey mode!

The sources of these images can be found on my pinterest boards. Hope they inspire you too!

Isn’t nature beautiful?

Hearts

Hearts are a popular recurring theme throughout various different ranges and pieces of my work. I really need to make some new heart shaped clocks, that will be something to add to my list of things to make. I’ve enjoyed putting together these heart themed mood boards below, using my pinterest collection. So I’ve got plenty of heart related inspiration to work with now!

Trip to the Seaside

What a week! I’ve just got back from a trip to the seaside, I stayed at a little bay on the coast with some friends near Plymouth. We had a great time, it was so nice to have a relaxing break. The weather was kind to us all week apart from Friday when it poured down with rain, but we didn’t mind as we were shopping indoors!

We had lots of fun outings together including some long walks with breath taking scenery. And a spot of fishing in the rock pools too!

I was in heaven on some of the beaches and couldn’t stop snapping away with my camera, taking inspirational photos of the rocks and caves for my work.

I collected a whole bunch of these flat pebbles from the beach, they certainly made the car heavier on the way home! I’m going to make some photo frames and decorate the edge of some mirrors with them.

We couldn’t resist building a sand castle! You can see how flat the pebbles are more clearly here…

This is what some people decided to do with the pebbles! We saw a few of these along the beaches, people built them to light a fire inside at night, I thought they were really cool.

And it wouldn’t have been a holiday without some sunbathing!

I’m feeling very refreshed and inspired after the well needed break, ready to crack on with orders and more new work.
Hope you all had a great week x

Beach Huts

Gorgeous weather this weekend! I’m feeling very summery now, and looking forward to a week away at the seaside with some friends a week on Monday. I’m hoping to do a bit of beach combing! (as well as eating fish & chips, ice creams, shopping and chilling out by the sea!) When I think of the seaside I think of beach huts… I love how they are positioned all in a row in different colours, and their different wooden surfaces. I’ve created a beach hut inspiration board on Pinterest, and will be starting to incorporate beach huts into my work soon.

Hope you all have a lovely sunny weekend wherever you are!

My work in Ceramic Review!

The other night I was flicking through some of my old Ceramic Review magazines and came across a page featuring my degree show pieces from university. I had forgotten all about the feature and it was nice seeing my name in print. Can you spot the two sculptural vessels below?

These pieces don’t look it from the photograph, but they were large pieces about 90cm tall, level with my waist! There were three vessels altogether – I still have one, one is currently on display in a gallery and the other one sold in a garden sculpture exhibition in 2009.

I am bursting with inspiration now that I have read some interesting stories, browsed lots of lovely shapes, forms and colours of ceramics, and looked at interesting step-by-step processes.

So it will be off to the workshop for me again, working on some new pieces and continuing to develop others!

Below ~ Kate Malone (my idol)

With all this magazine talk….. I can’t hold back from sharing it any longer……

I am going to be in VOGUE magazine!!!

It will be the next issue which is out early June, and one of my products will be featured on the ‘Summer Hues’ page. I’m so excited! Let me know if you spot it :)

Dandelions

I have discovered a new love and passion for these beautiful flowers, if you can call a dandelion a flower. I used to pick them as a child and make a wish, then blow the seeds away.

Did you know that dandelions are found as weeds worldwide? But they are so pretty!

Each single flower in the head of the plant is called a ‘floret’.

You can view more of my inspirational dandelion images on Pinterest here – I’ve been going mad pinning dandelions here and there! I think I’m going to make an inspiration board full of dandelion images to put up in the workshop too, so expect to see some dandelion inspiration coming through in my work soon!

Surface Designs

Looking through my folder of inspiration images, I came across many that involved some sort of circular design. I put together this collage above of some of my favourites, and then compared them to some images of my work involving circles too. I think it is clear to say that circle patterns in nature are a big source of inspiration for my work!

Natural Inspiration

The inspiration for my ceramics comes from the natural world and many of the organic objects and surfaces around us. Nature is a huge source of inspiration for many artists & designers, but we all take something different from it in our own way, with how it is interpreted in our work.

Not only do I love this arrangement of cut apples above, (the different forms, how they are grouped together, the subtle greens from inside of the apples and the deep reds on the skin), but also the distressed paint in the background, what a gorgeous surface!

This photo by ‘redmegan‘ below is equally as beautiful, I love the layers of thick leaves with that burst of colour.

This beautiful pattern that has been formed from sand erosion reminds me of an impression in clay. The detail is amazing. The photo was taken by Ken Douglas on Flickr.

Next up is this carefully arranged cobbled pathway, which reminds me of individual sheets of clay that are pieced together when constructing my sculptural vessels.

I found the image above on this blog. I was particularly inspired by the following quote, written by the author of the blog;

“Natural fractals can be found in so many forms, shells, snowflakes, crystals, wildlife, the coastline, trees, leaves, plants, germs. As with fractals’ pattern inside another, the list goes on and on.”

I saved the best image til last :)

Don’t you just love the crevices and rock formations? The photograph above was taken at Shore Acres, Oregon Pacific Coast, and was one of the many striking images to win the International Award in Photography for the Conservation of Wildlife. <-- Check out some of the other photographs by following this link, especially if like me you love nature and wildlife, they are stunning!
