Spring Birthday Celebrations

On my birthday last week I ran a special offer on my Facebook page Charlotte Hupfield Ceramics (where you’ll always find plenty of offers, prizes and giveaways!), all orders placed on my birthday would receive a special treat: one of my handmade ceramic magnets, a brooch AND a card! I was overwhelmed by the response and spent most of Friday morning packing up complimentary goodies to send out with orders. Yay!

My birthday was a lovely sunny spring day where I visited my favourite local farm shop with friends and enjoyed toasted hot cross buns with hot chocolate, and plenty of cream! My friends baby, Ellie, joined us and we had lots of fun watching the free range chickens.

I really don’t feel 26!

I also spent the morning riding Dizzy – a new addition to my life at the moment. Isn’t she gorgeous? She’s always full of energy, keeping me on my toes!

More new work will be underway very soon, but until then, have you seen the latest collection in my online shop? Happy browsing!

Sunday…

A snapshot of my Sunday this weekend…

I don’t know about you, but I’m so looking forward to the arrival of Spring!

As 2012 comes to an end…

I was a little delayed in publishing this post!…..

Just before Christmas I spent a wonderful few days in Germany and got full swing into the festive spirit with the delicious smells from the Christmas markets, yummy German speciality food and even saw some snow.

Back home it felt such a relief to send out the last of my custom orders of the year, and to have a little tidy up of the workshop ready to start all over again in the new year. After wrapping presents, munching mince pies and a glass of wine or two, it was time to celebrate with some friends. And what better way to celebrate than with a Christmas fancy dress party! There were snowmen, Christmas puddings, santa’s, Christmas trees… and I went dressed as a present :) Although the outfit didn’t stay on for long!

Looking back over 2012 it has been an amazing year and I would like to thank each and every one of you who has placed an order, bought an item from me, been an admirer of my work, for your continuous positive comments and support, and for all of the friends I have made along the way. I couldn’t have done it without you!

* Here’s to a happy and successful 2013! *

Spring is on its way!

What a lovely day it has been today! The sun has been shining all day long, we’ve had the patio doors open and have had some washing drying on the line. It’s a lovely feeling knowing spring is on the way. I can’t wait for the full warmer, longer days when we can sit outside in the evenings. It seems so long since we last did it.

I have also been having a spring clean in the workshop today. Some of you already know that we will be moving house again at the beginning of March (various reasons, but we are moving to a much nicer house and area), so today was the first time I’ve tackled the workshop. Everything seems to have built up in there, but today it was good to organise everything and put everything in the right boxes ready to move.

As well as getting ready for the move, I have also been preparing for my next craft fair and exhibition in March. I hope I’m not being too ambitious!

I’m really pleased with how things for Charlotte Hupfield Ceramics are going so far this year. So far so good! As well as keeping busy creating new individual products I have been supplying some of my current stockists with new work, and have a few potential new stockists lined up. I will be keeping you up to date with other exciting news soon :)

For now I’ll leave you with these images of some of the latest products that are new on my website this week. As always I would love to hear your comments. Fingers crossed for another sunny day tomorrow!

Mr & Mrs Plaque – Great wedding gift!

Don’t forget to become a fan of Charlotte Hupfield Ceramics on facebook to keep up to date with news :)

January Blues are almost over…

January is a strange time of year. Christmas seems like such a long time ago, while summer feels like such a long time away. With the ‘January Blues’ almost over, I’m hoping things will seem to brighten up a little, including the weather. I can’t wait to feel the warmth of some sunshine. It has been very cold in the workshop, especially my clay! I had to bring some clay into the house the other day to finish making some new work as my fingers were getting too cold, but I had better not start getting into that habit!

I chose this photo to post on my blog today because its colourful and cheery, and puts a smile on my face. I bought the flowers for my mum a couple of weeks ago and she put them in one of my vessels that she has. Couldn’t resist taking a photo of that gorgeous gerbera! Hope it cheers you up too :)

Molly

Molly is now 9 months old, I can’t believe how fast the time has gone since I got her as a kitten.

‘Molly Moo’, as she is now famously known in our house, is such a cute, loving, energetic and lively character. When we first brought her home we thought she would be no trouble at all – she was so timid and cautious.

But we soon realised she just hadn’t gotten used to the house yet. You should see her now! She loves to play with anything and everything, especially things that aren’t her own toys.

She now comes and goes in and out of her cat flap, although she hasn’t wandered out of the garden yet. She’s too much of a wimp! Have you ever known a cat to run like the wind when a small bird swoops down and whistles? She bombs back into the house through the cat flap like a shot when she gets scared. I don’t think shes used to the wild noises yet.

She’s certainly found some silly ways of falling asleep…

…and still has fun climbing.

I keep looking back on the photos of her as a baby kitten and can’t believe how quickly she grew. Any pet owners out there – make sure you take lots of photos of your pets when they are young!

Now that she’s bigger, she still likes to fall asleep in silly positions…

…and still likes being cheeky, especially being nosey with things that aren’t hers.

And she’s also still as cute as ever!!!

Quiche Recipe, cheeky Molly!

I got my mum a Rachel Allen food processor for her birthday. Her birthday isn’t til March but she had her present early. She’s been baking all sorts recently, and her new speciality is quiches. They’re delicious!

The food processor is great because it can be used for mixing cakes, slicing & shopping ingredients, blending food, and even kneading dough.

We were only recently saying how Molly seems to enjoy playing with things around the house more than her own toys. She loves scrunched up bits of paper and sweet wrappers – we often find stashes of these under the furniture! She also likes hiding out in cosy places, so we thought it would be funny to cut a hole in the box that the food processor came in, leave it on the floor and see what she did.

She soon made it her own little hide out! Theres a blanket in there now, and sometimes all you can see if her tail sticking out of the hole!

Here’s the recipe my mum uses for her Roasted Tomato, Basil & Parmesan quiche:

Ingredients

For the pastry

  • 280g plain flour , plus extra for dusting
  • 140g cold butter , cut into piece
Method

  1. To make the pastry, tip the flour and butter into a bowl, then rub together with your fingertips until completely mixed and crumbly. Add 8 tbsp cold water, then bring everything together with your hands until just combined. Roll into a ball and use straight away or chill for up to 2 days. The pastry can also be frozen for up to a month.
  2. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to a round about 5cm larger than a 25cm tin. Use your rolling pin to lift it up, then drape over the tart case so there is an overhang of pastry on the sides. Using a small ball of pastry scraps, push the pastry into the corners of the tin (see picture, above left). Chill in the fridge or freezer for 20 mins. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6.
  3. In a small roasting tin, drizzle the tomatoes with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Put the tomatoes in a low shelf of the oven.
  4. Lightly prick the base of the tart with a fork, line the tart case with a large circle of greaseproof paper or foil, then fill with baking beans. Blind-bake the tart for 20 mins, remove the paper and beans, then continue to cook for 5-10 mins until biscuit brown.
  5. When you remove the tart case from the oven, take out the tomatoes, too.
  6. While the tart is cooking, beat the eggs in a large bowl. Gradually add the cream, then stir in the basil and season. When the case is ready, sprinkle half the cheese over the base, scatter over the tomatoes, pour over the cream mix, then finally scatter over the rest of the cheese. Bake for 20-25 mins until set and golden brown. Leave to cool in the case, trim the edges of the pastry, then remove from the tin. Scatter over the remaining basil and serve in slices.
There are loads of different flavour combinations to try out, these sound yummy too – goats cheese & watercress, cheddar & onion, leek & mushroom, rocket, mushroom & bacon, goats cheese, potato & onion. Enjoy!

Spring is on its way…

I can’t wait to see the bulbs emerging from the ground, the leaves on the trees starting to grow bright and green, and the sound of newborn lambs in fields everywhere. There is a nearby dairy farm that we visit every year during lambing season, its always exciting to see if we can spot any being born in the barns.

I did like the periods of snow while it lasted, but I have to admit I got fed up with driving in it. Or should I say not being able to drive in it – My house is at the bottom of a hill so no cars could drive up! I’m glad we have seasons, its nice for the change when you start getting fed up of the weather. I’ve already noticed the evenings are starting to stay lighter earlier.

Why not treat yourself to some handmade Spring inspired goodies?

Apple Tree Coasters – set of 4, £9.00

Plus lots more handmade items on my website here. Some ideal gifts for Valentines and Mother’s Day.

Tunisia here we come!

Me and Dave booked our holiday at the weekend to Port El Kantaoui, Tunisia, for a week in May. We will be staying at Riu Bellevue Park Hotel. I’m so excited and its such a nice feeling having a holiday to look forward to.

Can’t wait to be on that beach!!

Tasty Treats, Best Friends & New Lights

You will probably look at these photos and think I’m a greedy pig. And if you do, you are right!! I love food and trying out new combinations. My recent favourite was this bowl of nacho’s covered in salsa, chunks of chicken, red kidney beans, and topped with grated cheese. I microwaved it all for about 1 minute to melt the cheese, and I like the nacho’s to go a bit soft. It was very yummy but also very messy finger-eating food!

My mum has been baking a lot over the past few weeks. She’s been using the recipe from Dave’s mum to make loaves of poppyseed bread which are absolutely delicious. This weekend she made a sponge cake with vanilla cream icing and filling, with white chocolate chips on top. It was an alternative to the big chocolatey cake she made last week, but I find chocolate cakes too sickly.

Thanks to everyone who gave me some great ideas for my pastry fillings, I’m definitely going to try some of them out, they sound scrummy!

During the winter we always put a blanket over half of Alice’s (the cockatiel) cage so she can snuggle up under it. Molly seems to have made herself right at home up there! But I don’t think Alice minds, I think she likes the company. They have become quite good friends, although I’m not going to let Alice out of the cage to find out.

I had a successful shopping trip the other day, and found these lights to clamp onto my tables at craft fairs. The height of them looks good, and the shape of the bulb should shine the light a bit further across the tables.

I can’t wait to test them out at my first craft fair of the year on 31st January. It will be at the Northampton Franklin’s Gardens Conference Centre (centrally located, 4 mins from the M1, biggest suite in the region) from 10am – 4pm, an impressive venue with lots of high quality ‘handmade only’ crafts. Postcode for the venue is NN5 5BG. Drop by to say hello if you’re in the area, you could even do a spot of shopping!

Blog Award, Shop Favourited & more Baking!

It made my day today when I found out I had been given a blog award, and that someone else had chosen my Folksy Shop as their favourite in an interview.

The interview is over at NiftyKnits blog, where she interviewed Chicita of Gimme That Thing. When Chicita was asked to choose her favourite Folksy shop, she explained my shop was her favourite because “Charlotte’s designs are uncomplicated and effective. As a ceramicist myself, I know how easy it is to take a design that little bit too far, and how difficult it is to know when to stop.” - Thank you Chicita!

Below is my Colourful Glass Base Ceramic Dish which is available in my Folksy shop.

I was also pleased to have received this Sunshine blog award from BLONDEDESIGN, maker of Coast and Country handmade home accessories, decorative items and gifts from new, vintage & retro materials.

The Sunshine Award is awarded to bloggers whose positivity & creativity inspires others in the blog world.

This was a difficult decision as there are so many great blogs I love reading. Here are the 12 blogs I have chosen to pass this award onto: (in no particular order)

Check them out for some interesting and inspiring reading!

Last night I made these cheese, tomato and mushroom pastry puffs. They are delicious if I may say so myself! I’m looking for some more yummy ideas of what to put in them – any ideas?

New Years Resolution

I’ve enjoyed looking back on my blog to see what progress I’ve made over the past year. It will be interesting to see what 2010 brings. In my last post I mentioned an ambitious new years resolution. It’s something I’ve always thought about doing since I was at uni, but I was put off but my tutor who thought it wouldn’t be the right path to go down.

Anyway, I’ve decided I want to give it a go. I’m aiming to stock my work in a garden centre this year! Since a lot of my ceramics are suitable for outdoor use, I’m hoping it will be a good idea to approach garden centres. I’ve had success with galleries and will continue to restock my current gallery stockists but I want to try something different as well.

I’ve had a look around a few near-by garden centres and I’m aware that most items like pots, vases, trinket gifts, decorations and ornamental items are sold in batches of the same thing – just like other shops. However all of my work is made as individual one-offs, so I would need to find out if a display of my individual one-off items would be ok, or if I would need to make batches of items the same or similar.

At my local garden centre there is a nice gift shop that sells handmade glassware and other gifts (its all quite expensive!), so I might see if my coasters, clocks, magnets and brooches could fit in there too. I’m excited just thinking about it!
I’d really appreciate any hints, tips or thoughts anyone could give if you have experience approaching shops with your work. I’m comfortable approaching galleries but I think a garden centre in particular will be much different.
